Electrical Cardioversion

Electrical Cardioversion, or DC Cardioversion uses an electrical current to correct an irregular heartbeat and return it to normal sinus rhythm.

This is achieved by administering an electric shock to the chest whilst a patient is under sedation or general anaesthetic.

Patients may be referred for this procedure if they are diagnosed with persistent abnormal heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation.

This procedure is performed at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
